British Institutes certifies language skills according to the standards of the Council of Europe (COE) which are laid down in the Common European Framework.
 
The British Institutes Certification Board offers the following examinations:

• ESOL General English, geared to adults, teenagers, Secondary Schools and Universities
• ESOL Young Learners geared to primary school children and lower secondary school (Middle School) teenagers.
• British Institutes Business English geared to Managers and Professionals, examining economic-business language skills

• ESP (English for Special Purposes) geared to Professionals, to the University world for First Degree and Specialisation Degree courses, Master’s degrees, and to students in the final years of Secondary School. It certifies skills in scientific fields of English (Economics, Medicine, Law etc.).    

British Institutes examinations assess the four fundamental skills through specific tests (subtests) for:

• written comprehension (Reading),
• written production (Writing & Use of English),
• oral comprehension (Listening)
• oral production (Oral)

The British Institutes ESOL General English examinations may either be taken on-line or on paper; they are generated by a platform that enables the dispensing of examination tests that are always unique and unrepeatable, at all times of the year.
